Eating Disorders

I love being a Health Education Major! Health is something that we use all day, every single day of our lives. Did I use geometry, geology, astrology, biology, algebra, etc. today?! No. But hello, I decided how much sleep I was going to get, what I was going to eat, how much exercise I would do, whether or not I was going to wear my seat belt, how I would handle situations, what I would do about my stress, how would I treat others, and the list goes on and on. This semester I am taking a class that is for Secondary Health Ed. majors only. In this class we split up all of the standards for the Utah State Core Curriculum. I was assigned a standard that deals with Nutrition and more specifically eating disorders. The idea is for me to gather as much information and resources as I can, make copies for everyone, and then give those copies to the other students in my class. It's been fun gathering this info and I've learned so much. My only hope for when I am a teacher is that my students will walk out of my class a better person than when they walked in. I hope that I can influence them to make healthier choices so they can live LONGER AND HAPPIER lives! The video below came from one of my good friends. She suffered from an eating disorder for over 14 years. So sad. She is amazing and I definitely consider her to be one of my heroes. She is now teaching in California and I'm sure she's changing the lives of many young people over there. Here's her story and the AMAZING video she made. I can't wait to use this in my classroom. Statistics prove I will have at least three students each semester who suffer from an eating disorder (Statistics say three but I would say more). As a teacher, if I am even able to influence one of those students' lives and help them for the better, then that will be good enough for me and my teaching mission will be fulfilled.
And on a side note, thanks to everyone who comments on my blog! I love reading your comments and I appreciate them. I know I am not as good as commenting as all of you are, but I am working on it... Just know I do read your blogs and I think about you all. Yay for blogging which keeps us all in tune with each other. I love you all!

This other video comes from Dove. Dove has an organization which promotes woman's health and focuses on the adolescent population. They are trying to teach that what we see in the media is not REAL. How great is that?! If only it worked...

Man that first video was intense. I personally never had to deal with ever worrying about my weight in high school so having an eating disorder was never something I had to think or deal with, even though multiple times I was accused of being annerix. I have a family member who had an eating disorder when she was in high school. She now is a health freak, has six kids and is 85 pounds. She doesn't gain weight and has suffered from that decision made in high school to make sure she was thin. Accepted. It's so sad what the media does to our society and how they brain wash us. Thanks for posting this. That video was so awesome. For your friend to over come that disease and teach about it, shows a lot about her character. Tell her thank you for me.
